COMPETITION - second price
with Natàlia Ferrer
Project: December 2007
Promoter: Xixona Town Hall
Area: +-34.000'00 m2

In the
context of a cemetery feelings, latent and extreme, are mixed with
atavistic respect to death. The space add a symbolic
dimension to the
functional and aesthetic levels. The proposal wants
to synthesize those
multiple levels by a semi-buried treatment. The
recovery of the subsoil has a
double meaning: a symbolic and a practical one.
We free space that transform into a park for visitors use and takes us away from
the idea of a closed cemetery and monumental city of
the dead. The idea is to
combine solemnity and devotion using overlooking
platforms and litlle and
enclosed plazas by carefull use of the scale. The
concrete retaining walls, that
has a triple role, containing the soil, hosts niches
and marks the paths, will be
an object able to fold and fit the terrain.
It aims
to highlight the idea of a transit route as there is the image of the
traditional calvary: with a zigzag path we save the
unevenness. Presiding over
the entire cemetery, as the ancient shrines, will be
the morgue building with
crematorium and autopsy room services.
Niches
recover the concept of burial when embedden in the containing walls.
The formal solution for pantheon returns them
to earth. Each pantheon is
materializaed in the surface by its entry slab
and next to it will appear two
milestones: a tree that each family can plant in
their flower bed, leaving his
election last part of the realization of the
cemetery, and the structure on which
the tombstones will be placed. From any point of the
cemetery can be seen
these structures, randomly distributed, forming
groups, forest of tombstones that
we remember our dead.
